Minecraft 26.2: Snapshots 1 and 2 - Chaos Cubed

The development cycle for Minecraft 26.2 starts strong with its first two snapshots. Mojang introduces the first features of the upcoming game drop Chaos Cubed, bringing a brand-new underground biome, new blocks, and most importantly, a completely unique mob: the Sulfur Cube.

Alongside these gameplay additions, Mojang is also testing Vulkan rendering in Java Edition. However, for most players, the real highlight is the new exploration content and gameplay mechanics.

The Sulfur Caves: a new underground biome

The main addition in Snapshot 1 is the introduction of the Sulfur Caves, a new biome that generates underground, especially beneath hills and mountains.

This biome features a distinct atmosphere, with layers of sulfur and cinnabar, unique water pools, and a more hazardous environment compared to standard caves. On the surface, players can identify these areas through Sulfur Springs, natural formations made of sulfur, potent sulfur, and magma blocks.

This new biome enhances underground exploration with a strong visual identity and new environmental challenges.

The Sulfur Cube: a new interactive mob

The standout feature of this update is the Sulfur Cube. This new mob spawns in the Sulfur Caves and introduces a completely new gameplay mechanic.

Its core ability is to absorb blocks. When a player interacts with it while holding a compatible block, the Sulfur Cube consumes it and changes its behavior. Depending on the absorbed block, its physical properties are modified: it can become bouncy, heavy, slippery, or lightweight.

Once it contains a block, the Sulfur Cube behaves almost like a physical object. Players can push it, hit it, and interact with it dynamically. This opens the door to new gameplay possibilities, including creative mechanics, mini-games, and custom map interactions.

The mob also features an evolution system. When killed, it splits into two smaller Sulfur Cubes. These can be fed with Slime Balls to grow back into a larger version. It is even possible to capture a large Sulfur Cube using an empty bucket.

Potent Sulfur: a new environmental hazard

The Sulfur Caves also introduce a new block called Potent Sulfur. Found naturally in water pools, it adds a new environmental danger.

When placed underwater, it generates bubbles and can create a nausea-inducing gas cloud at the surface. This mechanic makes exploration more dangerous and adds depth to the biome’s design.

Potent Sulfur can also be crafted, opening up possibilities for traps, custom mechanics, or creative builds on servers.

New blocks for building

Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 1 also introduces two new block sets: Sulfur and Cinnabar.

Both materials include standard building variants such as polished blocks, bricks, slabs, stairs, walls, and chiseled versions. These additions provide new aesthetic options for industrial, underground, volcanic, or fantasy-themed builds.

Vulkan enters testing

This snapshot also marks the beginning of Vulkan testing in Minecraft Java Edition. A new “Graphics API” setting allows players to switch between Vulkan and OpenGL depending on their hardware.

This is an important step for the future of Java Edition, especially in preparation for upcoming visual improvements, although it remains experimental at this stage.

Snapshot 2: stability and fixes

Snapshot 2 does not introduce major new gameplay features. Instead, it focuses on fixing critical issues discovered after Snapshot 1.

This update mainly includes:

  • crash and bug fixes,
  • improvements related to Vulkan,
  • better performance when upgrading older worlds.

Snapshot 2 ensures that the foundation introduced in Snapshot 1 is stable before further development continues.

An update focused on experimentation

With Chaos Cubed, Mojang continues to explore new gameplay ideas. The Sulfur Cube stands out as one of the most original mobs introduced in recent updates, offering physics-based interactions never seen before in Minecraft.

Combined with a new biome, new resources, and environmental hazards, Minecraft 26.2 is shaping up to be an update focused on creativity, experimentation, and emergent gameplay.

For servers, these features open up many possibilities: mini-games based on Sulfur Cubes, adventure maps in Sulfur Caves, or enhanced survival experiences with new resources and mechanics.
