The Voicechat (Simple Voice Chat) mod has become a must-have for modded Minecraft servers. It allows players to use in-game voice communication without relying on external tools like Discord.
Easy to use, immersive, and perfectly suited for multiplayer, Voicechat completely transforms the gameplay experience, especially on community servers.
In this article, we explain what Voicechat is, why it is useful, and how to install it easily on your Minecraft server with OMGSERV.
What is the Voicechat mod?
The Voicechat mod allows players to communicate using voice directly inside Minecraft.
Unlike traditional voice chat systems, Voicechat uses proximity-based audio:
- the closer a player is, the louder their voice
- the farther away they are, the quieter they become
- the direction of the sound depends on their position
This system provides a highly immersive experience, similar to modern multiplayer games.
Why use Voicechat on a Minecraft server?
Adding in-game voice chat brings many advantages, especially for multiplayer servers.
Improved immersion
With proximity voice, interactions feel much more natural. Players can talk as if they were physically present in the game world, which is ideal for roleplay servers, survival multiplayer, and community events.
Less reliance on external tools
Voicechat removes the need for tools like Discord for quick in-game communication, simplifying the experience for players.
Perfect for community servers
On servers with multiple players, Voicechat helps create spontaneous interactions, improves coordination, and makes events more dynamic. It is a major advantage for any community-driven server.
Installing Voicechat on an OMGSERV Minecraft server
Installing Voicechat on an OMGSERV server is simple, but requires a specific configuration, especially for networking.
Follow these steps.
1. Stop your server
Before making any changes, fully stop your Minecraft server from your OMGSERV panel.
2. Upload the Voicechat mod
Once the server is stopped, upload the mod files using the WebFTP to add Voicechat to your Minecraft installation.
3. Assign a dedicated port
Voicechat requires a specific port to function.
To do this:
- go to the Plugins section of your OMGSERV panel
- click on Assign a new port
Once assigned, note down the provided IP address and port. You will need them for configuration.
4. Configure the Voicechat file
Access your server files and open the following file:
voicechat-server.properties
Modify the following settings:
bind_address=YOUR_IP
port=YOUR_PORT
bind_address should contain the IP address provided by OMGSERV and port should contain the assigned port.
Save the file once the changes are made.
5. Restart the server
Once configured, restart your server. Voice chat will now be active for all players who have the Voicechat mod installed on their client.
